How to Find the Passkey to Wi-Fi Connections in Windows 10

Ever need to know the password for a Wi-Fi connection that you’ve already connected to?

So you are in your conference room, getting ready for a big sales meeting. In come the prospective clients. You shake hands, everyone takes out their laptops and/or tablets. Then the inevitable question arises from one of your guests; “What’s your Wi-Fi password?” It very possible you only used this password once when you first connected to your wireless network and have not thought of it since. So, how do you find password?

  1. Right-Click the Wi-Fi Indicator in the lower right hand side of your screen. Select “Open Network and Sharing Center”.

  2. You’ll see your Wi-Fi Connection on the right hand side of the window that opens. Click on your Connection.

  3. Click “Wireless Properties.”

  4. In the next window, you’ll need to select the “Security” tab. You’ll see a windows where your password is masked out next to “Network Security Key”. Select “Show Characters.” Your password will now be visible.

This method works great when you are connected to the wireless network that you need the password for. But what about when you’re not connected? You can hunt forever with your mouse, but I’m afraid you’re going to need to open the command prompt for this one.

  1. Open a command prompt. This can be done by clicking the start button and typing “cmd”. You should see the icon for the command prompt to click and open.
  2. Type the following command in the windows that opens up. “netsh wlan show profile name=“SSID NAME” key=clear”. Replace “SSID NAME” with the name of the wireless network you want to find the password for.
  3. Lots of Information comes up. What you are looking for are the characters next to “Key Content” under Security settings.

These steps should also work in Windows 7 and 8.1.
